Aim
To provide delegates with a good understanding of biomedical equipment principles, applications and maintenance procedures.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:

Biomedical equipment maintenance practice| EMBC

• State the physiological reasons for using a particular piece of biomedical equipment
• Describe the principles of operation of a wide range of biomedical equipment
• Perform tests to assess the performance and safety of such equipment
• Assess possible hazards associated with the use and maintenance of biomedical equipment and describe measures for their minimisation.

Accreditation
This course has been specifically designed to provide a BTEC qualification from Edexcel awarding body

Other information
The course is ideally suited to those with some knowledge of instrumentation but lacking experience with biomedical systems. Staff with an electrical background employed in acceptance and/or routine safety testing of equipment will also benefit. Delegates will gain confidence in working with biomedical equipment by carrying out structured practical assignments on equipment covered during the course. NB: This course can now be taken as two 4.5 day modules. In order to qualify for the BTEC accreditation delegates must complete the two week training within a 12 month period.

Who will benefit?
The course will provide an excellent foundation for medical engineering staff who are to be involved with the maintenance of anaesthetic equipment.

Aim
To provide practical experience in the basic maintenance of, and safety procedures used with, a wide range of anaesthetic equipment.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:

• Identify, handle and safely connect a range of medical gas cylinders
• Carry out routine servicing procedures and performance tests on a range of therapy flow meters and regulators, cylinders and pipeline entonox equipment and pipeline sustion equipment.
• Perform safety and pre-use checks on anaesthetic trolleys (association of Anaesthetic checklist) .
• Recognise potentially hazardous situations and take appropriate action.

Who will benefit?
Technicians involved with the management , maintenance and operation of patient ventilators.

Aim
To provide a working knowledge of ventilators used in theatres, ITU and special care baby units.

Objectives
Delegates will acquire the skills and knowledge to:

• Describe the basic physiology of the lungs and the effects of positive pressure ventilation on the body.
• Differentiate between different ways of supplying gases to a ventilator and describe characteristics of blenders and medical gas hoses.
• Describe the mechanical principles of patient ventilation.
• Name a number of theatre, ITU, SCBU and transport ventilators, differentiate between the types, briefly explain their function and be aware of their typical maintenance requirements.
• Define a list of physical and biological safety precautions that need to be observed when working with ventilators.

Safety testing of Electrical medical equipment | EMME

Who will benefit?
Staff involved in safety testing of medical equipment who require an update or refresher.

Aim

• List hazards of electrical medical equipment and identify their causes
• Perform acceptance tests on electrical medical equipment to an appropriate code of practice.
• Perform routine electrical safety tests on electrical medical equipment to an appropriate code of practice
• Record the results of such tests in an appropriate form

Accreditation
This course is not yet accredited.

Other Information
The Biomedical Equipment Maintenance Practice course covers the subject matter of this course, and is designed as an introduction for new staff. This course is to update more experienced staff.
This course involves a large element of practical work during which course members use a comprehensive range of test equipment to perform safety testing on various items of equipment.

About the Qualification
Eastwood Park in partnership with Kingston University, and in association with the Sector Skills Councils of Skills for Health and SEMTA, the Department of Health, IHEEM and the IDSc, has developed a Foundation Degree for three areas of medical technology:

Foundation Degrees are new qualifications designed by employers to make sure their skill needs are being met. They are ideal for staff that don’t want to give up their job to study full-time and are a great way of achieving personal educational aims using a more vocational route.  This particular programme can be studied on a flexible basis, as it is delivered by a ‘blend’ of learning methods. It is likely that elements of the programme will be studied in the workplace, at home and at Eastwood Park.  All Foundation Degrees are university validated and provide a route to progression to the third year of one or more Honours Degrees at the validating university.

Who will it Benefit?
This Foundation Degree goes beyond the Level 3 NVQ’s in these technology areas and will allow access to the final year of a number of Kingston Universities Science and Engineering Honours Degrees. In addition the programme will relate to the Voluntary Register of Clinical Technologists and membership of relevant Professional Bodies. It is suitable for current and aspiring Managers, Supervisors, Test Persons, Authorised Persons, Engineers, and Senior Technicians etc working in these medical technology areas.

Modules
This Foundation Degree consists of common mandatory core modules, which all students must study, as well as pathway specific modules relevant to the student’s work role. The details of these modules are outlined below.

How do I enrol?
