Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate Apprenticeship

Decontamination Science Pathway

The Level 4 Healthcare Science Associate Apprenticeship combines workplace learning with the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science.

Apprentices will develop knowledge in healthcare decontamination, focusing on the cleaning, disinfection, inspection, packaging, sterilisation, storage, and distribution of reusable medical devices.

They will be required to carry out decontamination activities in accordance with relevant legislation, national standards, quality management systems, and infection prevention and control procedures, ensuring that medical devices are safe for patient use.
This pathway will also develop apprentices’ knowledge and understanding of microbiology, infection prevention and control principles, disease processes, and the impact of healthcare-associated infections.

Apprentices will gain an understanding of the role of decontamination services in supporting safe, effective patient care across NHS organisations and private healthcare providers, while maintaining compliance with regulatory and professional standards.

Mandatory qualification and core learning

All apprentices complete the same mandatory units which provide a common foundation in healthcare science before completing decontamination specialist units.
