What are the benefits Avensys apprenticeships?

Government funding

Apprenticeship training is government-funded, making it the most cost-effective way to upskill your staff.  For companies who pay into the Apprenticeship Levy (companies with a payroll of more than £3m a year), training costs are £0.

If you are a non-levy paying organisation or your levy pot runs out the government will still pay 95% of the cost of the apprenticeship. In real terms this means for example for a level 2 apprenticeship the government will pay £4750 of the £5000 cost meaning your organisation will only pay £250 for the full apprenticeship

Furthermore this £250 is actually spread out into monthly payments meaning that the cost of a level 2 apprentice would be £20.84 PCM

Additionally, the government are currently offering employers £1,000 for each apprentice they employ aged between 16-18. For full details see the government website: https://www.apprenticeships.gov.uk/employers/financial-incentives

Upskill existing engineers

Apprentices don’t have to be new recruits. You could enrol one of your current employees onto a higher apprenticeship or master’s degree level apprenticeship so they can benefit from training and gain qualifications. Investing in your employees has been proven to improve staff retention.

Future proof your department

There is currently a skills gap in medical engineering in the UK that has made it more difficult to recruit medical engineers. Apprenticeships provide an alternative solution to your recruitment problems by allowing you to recruit promising talent and develop them into the medical engineers of the future.

Training tailored to your department’s needs

Our assessors work closely with employers and apprentices to establish the needs of your business and adapt training accordingly. Furthermore, whilst your apprentice is at work they will be learning on the job and naturally become more familiar with the specific makes/models of medical devices your hospital owns.

Medical Engineering specific apprenticeship

Our apprenticeships are specifically focused on medical engineering and our Trainers are experienced medical engineers who have worked in the industry for decades. In contrast, many hospitals send their medical engineers to a local college to study electrical engineering which is less relevant to medical engineering and usually doesn’t cover medical devices.

Testimonials

  1. University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (Employer)

    Stephen Bond
Principal Engineer/Deputy Head of Clinical Engineering
    University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust

Medical engineering is a bespoke industry which requires talent to be brought in and developed. Apprenticeships provide an excellent opportunity for lifelong learning and development to support an ever-changing healthcare environment.

At our Trust we see our apprentices as the Clinical Engineers, Team Leads and Departmental Managers of the future. Through their work with us they’re becoming highly skilled and developing broad and detailed knowledge through education and work experience. Upon completion of their apprenticeships, we look forward to welcoming them to our team as Clinical Engineers.

We believe our apprentices add great value to the department due to their enthusiasm to develop new skills and progress within the organisation, this carries through to everything they do. They have helped us create better work practices by expressing their ideas and being given the freedom to implement them themselves. Our customer service has improved markedly as a result.

Since becoming our apprenticeship training provider, Avensys have performed very well. We’re pleased with the strong working relationships that have been built between our staff and the Trainers and Assessors at Avensys.

Watching our apprentices develop their skillsets whilst also growing their confidence and influence has been fantastic. We would definitely consider hiring more apprentices in the future as we see them as an important part of developing talent in our industry.

  2. NHS Trust (Apprentice)

    Nicholas Donaldson
    NHS Trust
    Assistant Medical Engineer

I decided to pursue an apprenticeship in medical engineering because I was looking to gain access into the field and gain some qualifications. Prior to starting my apprenticeship, I worked in a similar role as an Endoscopy Technician so I had some experience working with medical devices but I wanted to gain the proper qualification required to work in the field.

Day to day, I work in a hospital and my role includes servicing, repairs and general maintenance of medical equipment. The thing I enjoy most about my job is the repair work.

During my apprenticeship, Avensys have supported me very well. Once I complete my apprenticeship, I’m hoping to be taken on full time doing medical engineering, I think my apprenticeship will provide me with the experience and qualifications to get me a job in medical engineering.

  3. Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (Employer)

    Chris Moore
    Principal Technician
Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The main reason we chose to hire apprentices at our Trust was for workforce planning. We also see apprenticeships as an important part of succession planning in an industry with an ageing workforce.

So far, our apprentices have delivered value to the organisation and we’re hoping to retain them after they complete their apprenticeships where we are able to. The primary benefit we’ve received from employing apprentices has been their support to the department’s patient safety services to the Trust. We would certainly consider employing more apprentices in the future.

We currently have four apprentices from our department who are undertaking apprenticeships with Avensys. We’ve found Avensys to be both professional and supportive. This partnership has enabled us to develop our workforce in a way which is both academic and practical in our demanding healthcare environment.

  4. Leeds teaching hospitals (Apprentice)

    Larissa Thornley Johnstone
    Leeds teaching hospitals
    Apprentice Medical Engineer

I started looking for an apprenticeship in bio-medical engineering because I wanted a balance between hands on learning and academic learning. Before I got taken on as an apprentice I was studying bio-medical science at college but I feel as though I learn better with a more hands on approach.

I was drawn to a medical engineering role because I liked the idea of developing my designing, fault finding and problem-solving skills whilst at the same time being able to use those skills to fix medical equipment to help patients.

I work in a hospital and my job consists of repairing, servicing and acceptance testing medical equipment. Sometimes I visit the healthcare centres to service equipment and do walkthroughs on the wards.

What I enjoy most about my job is that there’s always something new to learn. Furthermore, I enjoy seeing how my work contributes to patient care and I gain satisfaction when I solve a fault on a piece of equipment or when I have fully serviced a piece of equipment and it gets put back into clinical use.

Avensys have supported me well during my apprenticeship. Once I’ve completed this apprenticeship I’d like to keep progressing in a medical engineering role and start a degree level apprenticeship. I think completing this apprenticeship will give me the experience and qualifications to progress to the job I’d like to do and increase my earning potential.

  5. Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust (Employer)

    Omran Darr
Apprenticeship Programme Lead for Medical Physics & Engineering
    Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust

We were finding it difficult to recruit people with the relevant skills to carry out complex work on specialised medical equipment. Therefore, the department decided to employ apprentices instead who we could train in-house, teaching them the relevant skills and knowledge required for our Trust’s needs.

We’ve been very impressed with the value our apprentices have delivered to the organisation. For us the apprenticeship system works well because at the end of their apprenticeship programmes, the Trust gets qualified, trained and competent staff. This is particularly important in our department due to the age profile of our employees, most of our staff being over fifty. We are using apprenticeships as part of our succession planning, to help us bridge the gap between ages in our department.

In bigger organisations like ours, the apprenticeship levy system works well because we can give our apprentices more opportunities to work in different areas of medical engineering.

Avensys have tried really hard to meet the demands of their customers. Now that Avensys have gone into partnership with Dudley College this will only strengthen their position as an apprenticeship provider. I am very pleased with the Assessor support we have had for our apprentices. The assessor has been heavily involved in the training and development of our apprentices.
