Level 4 Healthcare Science Apprenticeship

Clinical Engineering Pathway

This two-year long programme provides apprentices with structured work-based training in Clinical Engineering. During the course, apprentices will earn a Pearson BTEC Level 4 Diploma as part of their apprenticeship.

Training structure

While training in the workplace apprentices will not only have the opportunity to attend Dudley College of Technology webinars but also attend in person the Black Country and Marches Institute of Technology for specialist medical equipment course/s. Training this way provides both the knowledge and skills to work within a Medical Engineering environment.

Assessment & Qualification

Apprentices will complete an End Point Assessment through Health Education England (HEE) and the National School of healthcare Science (NSHCS) they will then attain the standard of Healthcare Science Associate.

On the job learning

Apprentices will perform tasks such as medical device maintenance/calibration (including electro-medical); managing technical data and writing technical reports. The apprentice will learn fundamental techniques to fault find, service and maintain a range of complex medical devices.

This Apprenticeship provides opportunities for new trainees or those already working within the Clinical Engineering (or Medical Engineering) sector to gain formal qualifications, develop existing skills and knowledge in Healthcare Science and developing new technical and professional skills.

What is included in the Level 4 Healthcare Science Diploma?

Continual Assessment

Throughout their apprenticeship, apprentices can expect regular review meetings with a dedicated assessor who has extensive Clinical Engineering experience. They will discuss learning, progress and opportunities. Their assessor will help them bring together a portfolio of evidence that will include case studies, professional documentation/discussion, witness testimony, assignments, reflection and many more types of evidence toward their diploma and apprenticeship standard. This is all collated in our Smart Assessor online learning platform.

Progression through Gateway

Once an apprentice has achieved their Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science; Level 2 English and Level 2 Mathematics qualifications (where required) and the skills, knowledge & behaviours set out in the Standard for a Healthcare Science Associate they will progress to End Point Assessment (EPA)

End Point Assessment

Here we will prepare the apprentice to finish their Apprenticeship, they will complete the following through external assessment:

• Vocational Competence Observation
• Professional Practice Test
• Professional discussion informed by the evidence presented

This is where they will demonstrate that they meet the full standard of Knowledge, Skills and Behaviours.

Professional Recognition

On completion of the apprenticeship, individuals will be eligible to join the Academy for HCS’s (AHCS) accredited Associate Register at Level 4.

Progression

Successful learners can progress on to higher level apprenticeships, develop into senior roles at work or go on to attend undergraduate programmes at university.
